FHRS goes live in Hackney. Health Minister Anna Soubry attended the launch of the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) by the London Borough of Hackney and presented some top rated food businesses with their certificates.

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme helps you choose where to eat out or shop for food by giving you information about the hygiene standards in restaurants, pubs, cafés, takeaways, hotels and other places you eat, as well as in supermarkets and other food shops.

Welcome to our website

We are a very experienced team of Environmental Health Officers, providing help and advice for food businesses across the country. We work with a lot of indenpendant food businesses helping them get the best food hygiene rating possible for their catering operation - whether it is a cafe, care home, children's nursery, restaurant, hotel or pub.

The Food Hygiene rating scheme

Local Authorities in England and Wales have adopted this scheme during their routine visits to the food businesses in their area. The inspecting officers have to operate to scoring guidelines when awarding a business it's hygiene rating from 0-5.

EHOs then publicise their ratings on a national website, and may eventually publicise the corresponding inspection letter. Whilst there isn't a legal requirement for a food businesses to display their rating in England, it is in Wales. Failure to display the Rating there corresponds to a fixed penalty notice of £200 or prosecution.

We have a good understanding of the working of the guidelines for this scheme, and this enables us to help you prepare and then maintain a good hygiene award.

What the scheme means to you

The media make good use of the Freedom of Information Act to find out how hygienic food premises are, so the Government has spent a lot of time researching ways of being proactive and publicising the inspection findings of Local Authority EHOs. The feedback on the introduction of the Rating Scheme has been positive overall.

The Government's research tells us that in tough economic times, businesses want to additional ways to attract our custom. By getting the public to take note of the hygiene rating for a food business, they hope that customers will vote with their feet when they purchase food.
